Spirit Week

It was spirit week at Megan's school this week. Each day they were supposed to dress according to the theme of the day. This was "hats, buttons and pins" day.
We painted her hair different colored stripes for "funky hair day". Megan missed "pajama day" because she was home with the stomach flu, of course. Is there an illness we haven't had at our house in the last couple of weeks? I guess I should have taken a picture of her home in her pjs. Anyway, here is a picture of Megan in her school shirt for "school colors" day. We love sponge curls!

Our trip to Scheels

Not sure if I spelled Scheels correctly or not but what a fun place! For those of you who have never heard of it before, Scheels is a very large sporting goods store, similar to Cabelas but larger. It opened in Reno/Sparks last fall. There is a ton of stuff for the kids to do while the parents are supposedly shopping. Well, not us. We were playing with the kids. We were there over 4 hours just playing. We were greeted by life size athletes ready to play with us when we entered the store. There were two huge fish tanks that stood as archways for people to walk under. One was a salt water tank and the other was a fresh water tank. We missed feeding time but you can see the fish here eating lettuce. Colton loved to watch the fish.
There were a couple shooting galleries. One was a computerized deer hunt. There was a simulated race car to ride in and interactive sports games to play where if, for example, the kids wanted to play soccer they kick the ball at a screen that looks like a goalie and net and the kids try to make a goal or pitch the ball and try to strike the player out etc. The kids also spent time playing on play ground equipment, sliding and climbing a rock wall.
In the middle of the store and two stories high was a Ferris wheel. Colton wasn't big enough. Jayce said it was too high and Blake was more than happy to stay with the boys and take pictures. We also visited with past presidents of The United States and wrestled with wild animals. But the kids seemed to enjoy this ride the most, especially Jayce.
It was a fun and inexpensive way to spend the day!

Attack of the eye critter

Like many people that we know, the kids have been sick. Jayce actually got sick last Thursday night and today, a week later is finally starting to get better. All the kids are being treated for strep throat. For some reason all our kids are super susceptible to it. The strange thing is that we think it started with Colton. That's unusual because he doesn't go to school or day care. And Megan...she doesn't even have tonsils! Didn't we have her tonsils removed last Fall so she wouldn't get strep anymore? I guess she's in that 1 percent group that may still get it even without tonsils. The surgery wasn't a 100% guarantee just 99% that she wouldn't get it again. She did bounce back sooner than the others.
On top of strep, Jayce has what I call an eye critter. It is a strange blood mole that started growing out of the inside of his lower eye lid. It all started with a scratch on his eye that he got back around Christmas. When the scratch went away, left behind, was a red dot that grew and grew and keeps growing. Jayce said, "Maybe it will get so big it will pop."
And sure enough, the night before last, he woke up in the night with blood on his pillow and under his eye. The next morning, he decided he wanted to pull it off since he says it doesn't hurt and he can't feel it. He tugged on it and that was the wrong thing to do. Blood gushed down his cheek and we had a hard time getting it to stop bleeding. Now most of the darn thing is black. It's like it's dying but underneath I can see a couple new ones starting. When I took Jayce to the pediatrician for his throat I had her look at the critter. In her 25 or so years of being a doc she has never seen anything like it so we were referred to an eye doc. The same day of the "explosion" Jayce came down with a severe head cold. Poor guy. Anyway, not sure if the cold caused extra fluid to build up in the critter which ultimately made it burst. Yesterday the poor kid looked abused with his black eye thing and red face, nose and mouth from wiping his nose for 2 days. The eye with the critter kept running big tears and he kept asking me if it was bleeding or not.

I love Valentine's Day

This year, our Valentine's Day started with a love note on the bathroom mirrors for Blake and the kids to see as soon as they woke up.After getting ready (well, not Jayce he was sick but made it for the picture) it was off to the kitchen to open valentines and eat breakfast. This is the valentine I made for Blake: It has become our tradition to have a pink breakfast: Pink pancakes, pink eggs, strawberry milk, and bacon. Last year Jayce wouldn't touch the eggs because they didn't look right. This year he was sick but did manage to eat some. Blake took Megan to the primary activity while I stayed home with sicky, and then lunch was heart shaped sandwiches. We're not done yet. We made pink valentine cookies with lots and lots of sprinkles.
We ate yummy pink, strawberry angle food cake and watched "Return to Me", the best love story ever! Hope your Valentine's Day was fun too.

Torturing Rhys

My girlfriend and I swap child care when we volunteer in our kids' classes. Our kids have become good buds. My girlfriend's kids are half the size of my little giants. Colton loves my girlfriend's youngest son Rhys, who is half Colton's weight and size. Colton is often found chasing him around, hugging him, picking him up, sitting on him, just always wants to be around him. The poor little guy has to be rescued a lot. Last week when I heard Rhys squealing, Colton was sitting on him with his hands on the little guys ears wiggling them back and forth. Hmm...wonder where he learned that. Seems like something you would do to a sibling you were trying to torture. We are going to have to work on personal space with Colton. Today Colton brought me the camera saying "show me the picture of me sitting on Rhys." I guess I should have taken one..

What do you mean you're not tired?

Colton is deciding that he doesn't need naps anymore. I put him down, he gets up. I put him back down he gets back up. He says, "It's not dark." I told him go to sleep and you can get up when Megan gets home from school. A few minutes later he comes out of his room saying, "Megan's home now." I say, " No she's not." Colton says, "Then let's go get her, Mom."
Meanwhile...Jayce is my sleepy head. He's 4 1/2 and still takes naps most days. I think when he goes to kindegarden next year he will probably come home afterward and have a nap.

He said yes!

I asked Colton if he needed to go potty and he said yes! Colton has been really resistant to potty training. He's two and a half now and I'm tired of changing diapers. A couple months ago we started training and were doing pretty good as long as I had my timer set every 30 min. to an hour to check for dry pants and take him. Most of those trips he refused to go even if I was pumping him full of liquids. He would never go unless he had so much pee that it was practically bursting out of him by the time we got to the bathroom. That is, if I got him there on time before he wet his pants. I don't know why he would refuse to go to the bathroom even when I knew he had to go. It was always "No!" He very seldom initiated that he had to go and pooping in the toilet?... Forget it! He has a huge aversion to sitting on the toilet even with child seat on it. Can't stand the potty chair either. When he does go it's always standing up and aiming well, more like shooting. We do a lot of clean up. He was doing really well for a short time there and I was so confident that I took him to church without a pull-up on. We were sitting on a short bench next too the wall like we usually do but this time we were sitting next to a visitor whom we didn't know. The visitor was sitting next to the wall and Colton next to him. "Colton, do you need to go potty? " "No!" He sure didn't because he already went...on the bench...cloth bench( I don't' know what it is made of but you know what I'm talking about)...next to the visitor!! Not a trickle, a huge puddle. I about died when I lifted him up to take him out and looked at the HUGE wet spot on the bench next to the visitor. The two tissues that I had on me wasn't going to clean that mess up. Hoping the visitor didn't slide our way any, I covered the mess with the tissues and carefully carried him out practically at arms length so not to get it on my dress all the while thinking "I'm glad he wasn't sitting on my lap." We got it cleaned up of course and you guessed it, he wears pull-ups to church. In stead of getting better at potty training Colton got more resistant but I said when this package of pull-ups runs out he will get trained. I think that is going to be next week. We hit the dollar store and got some super potty toys to use as rewards when he goes. When a kid says "I pooped my pants, Mom" they are ready to be trained.
